Canberra Plant Selector

UX/UI design

The Canberra Plant Selector is a website that gives users the opportunity to create their dream backyard, selecting plants appropriate for their home.

Challenge

While working at Giraffe Studios, I was tasked with redesigning the Canberra Plant Selector website. The challenge was to align the brand with the ACT Government's Everyday Climate Choices branding, ensuring consistency and cohesion while enhancing the user experience for selecting plants suitable for their homes.

Solution

We quickly realised an overhaul of the website’s user experience and interface was necessary. I conducted a UX audit of the site, refreshed the icons for each plant, and redesigned the website's UI to align with the ACT Government's branding guidelines and enhance overall user experience.

UX Process

To begin the redesign I did a UX Audit of the original website shown below. It recognises the pain points and gives recommendations.

User journey

The user journey map showed the needs and potential issues the user could face.

They needed an intuitive filtering system to find plants suitable for their individual home.

I designed wireframes showing two potential options for the layout.

I prototyped the two layouts and we conducted user tests to determine which layout was more successful. Option two was selected because the filter menu was deemed easier to navigate.

UX problem

The user was unable to save their plant selections, leaving them with a poor end to their experience.

I worked with our developer to introduce a favourites page where users could save the plants they chose and take the list to their nursery to buy.

This gives them an end result to the user experience and adds more value to the tool.
